Play Date with GROWN: Make Networking Fun Again!

One recurring theme since we launched has been getting creative people reconnecting through childlike play and exploration, and our most recent event was right on theme!

We recently partnered with GROWN Magazine for Play Date, a workshop and meet-up series that fosters genuine connections between creators of color. We had an amazing and inspiring time sipping wine-based cocktails courtesy of our new friends at Saint James Libations in Brooklyn, while bringing our special blend of play and networking into the crowd.

Whether they came solo or with a crew, every creative got a conversation starter kit—complete with our giant Creative Kin decks—to spark conversations, connections, and maybe a little friendly debate. The scavenger hunt bingo game was another hit, helping guests break the ice and work the room. Between swapping socials, planning coffee meetups, having aha moments, and getting new headshots (shoutout to our in-house photographer, Lola!), no one left empty-handed.

Witnessing and facilitating authentic connections in a Black female-owned and operated space reminded us why we do what we do as creative entrepreneurs. In a time when workforce stats look grim, social services are getting cut, and the economy feels more than a little shaky, staying connected to our creative selves can feel harder than ever. The mix of delusion and determination it takes to keep going these days is no joke, but Play Date reminded us it’s still very much worth it.

Angela Davis said, “What you cannot accomplish by yourself, and what may be frustrating and painful…if you do it in community with others, you can become powerful, you can become courageous.” May you find the courage and community to persevere just like we did at PlayDate.

Follow us on social to keep up with all things Creative Kin!
